September 26, 2025 – Public Health Command, East (PHC, East) recently concluded its annual Best Leader Competition, held from September 22nd to 26th at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. This rigorous event served as a critical platform to identify and recognize exceptional leaders within the command, ultimately selecting the Officer, Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO), and Soldier of the Year who will represent PHC, East at the Medical Readiness Command, East Best Leader Competition. The competition also identified strong enablers to supplement the team, reinforcing the PHC, East’s unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, professionalism, and sustained readiness across its ranks. The competition was designed to comprehensively assess candidates across a broad spectrum of essential military competencies, moving beyond simple task proficiency to evaluate attributes vital for success in dynamic operational environments. Participants were evaluated not only on their physical fitness and endurance demonstrated through the Army Fitness Test, but also on their proficiency in core Army Warrior Tasks, weapons handling skills, and a thorough understanding of both individual and collective tasks.


The competition was intentionally structured to be challenging, mirroring the demands placed upon Soldiers in real-world operational environments. Competitors attended to a demanding schedule that included execution of complex Army Warrior Task Lanes, a physically and mentally challenging Combat Water Survival Training exercise, simulated Convoy Operations designed to test tactical decision-making under pressure, conducted precision Land Navigation putting both map reading and compass skills to the test, and finished a tough Obstacle Course testing physical strength and agility. Beyond the physical challenges, candidates were required to demonstrate their analytical and communication skills through a written Essay, and their adaptability and problem-solving abilities during a dynamic Mystery Event. The competition culminated in a six-mile ruck march, designed to test the limits of endurance and fortitude, and to assess the ability to maintain composure and continue mission accomplishment under extreme duress. The selection process was meticulous, with evaluators carefully observing and scoring each participant’s performance across all events, placing emphasis not only on technical proficiency but also on the demonstration of key leadership attributes such as composure under pressure, effective communication, and the ability to inspire and motivate others.


After five days of intense competition, the winners were announced, representing the pinnacle of leadership and dedication within PHC, East. Captain Lane Martin, from the Veterinary Readiness Activity (VRA) – Fort Bragg, was named Officer of the Year. His consistent performance across all events and demonstrated leadership potential set him apart from his peers. Sergeant Darian Allen, VRA – Fort Eisenhower (Fort Gordon), earned the title of Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year. His excellent performance during the entire event demonstrated technical expertise, physical prowess, and unwavering dedication to duty. Finally, Specialist Alexander Esquibel, VRA – Fort Knox, was recognized as Soldier of the Year, showcasing exceptional discipline, attention to detail, and a commitment to exceeding standards.


The success of the 2025 PHC, East Best Leader Competition was largely attributed to the exceptional support provided by the VRA – Fort Bragg. The team expertly coordinated the logistics, provided essential resources, and ensured a safe and challenging environment for all participants.
