COLONEL JUSTIN R. SCHLANSER
Commander, Public Health Command, East
Colonel Schlanser received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Michigan State University in 2003 and his Master of Public Health degree from the same in 2013. He holds a Master of Strategic Studies degree from the US Army War College. He completed a clinical residency in zoological medicine through Michigan State University, Potter Park Zoo, and the Toledo Zoo, and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. He serves as the consultant to the Army Surgeon General for veterinary preventive medicine (AOC 64B).
His military assignments include: Officer in Charge, Veterinary Services, Fort Irwin; Instructor, Special Forces Qualification Course (MOS 18D, Special Forces medic, Special Operations Combat Medic Course) phase III and Group veterinarian, Joint Special Operations Medical Training Center and Special Warfare Medical Group (Airborne), Ft. Bragg. Regimental veterinarian, 75th Ranger Regiment, Ft. Benning, GA; Deputy Commander, Public Health Command District –Fort Gordon; Command Veterinarian, U.S. Army Africa/ SETAF, Vicenza, Italy; Commander, 218th Medical Detachment(VSS), Joint Base Lewis-McChord; Executive Officer to the Chief, Dental Corps, JBSA-Ft. Sam Houston; and Deputy Director, Surgeon, US Army South. Immediately prior to his command he worked as the Director, Defense Centers for Public Health-Aberdeen.
Colonel Schlanser is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, and the Wildlife Disease Association. His military education includes the AMEDD Officer Basic, Captain’s Career, and Intermediate Level Education courses, as well as the NATO Joint Medical Planner’s and Medical Intelligence courses. He completed Senior Service College as a resident student at the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA. In addition, he has attended the Joint Senior Medical Leaders Course, AMEDD Executive Skills Course, the Basic Airborne Course, the Army Instructor Training Course, the Joint Enroute Care Course, the Army Ranger School, and the Special Forces Combat Diver Qualification Course.
Colonel Schlanser is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit and holds the Surgeon General’s “A” proficiency designator. He has many military awards commensurate with his experience and rank. He wears the Parachutist’s badge, the German Fallschirmspringerabzeichen (bronze), the Canadian Parachutist badge, the Expert Field Medic Badge, the Special Operations Diver Badge, and the Ranger Tab.
Colonel Schlanser is married to Teri Schlanser, a Veterinary Corps officer herself, and has four children.
